Excision of anal fissure

A break or tear in the skin of the anal canal is called an anal fissure. It would be more appropriate for people with anal fissures who have tried medical treatment for at least one to three months but were unsuccessful to resort to a surgical procedure. The procedure refers to the surgical removal of the edges of the fissure and skin tags that may have formed with chronic tears.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is fissure surgery done?

The procedure can be done in two ways. In an open sphincterotomy, your surgeon makes a small cut in your skin so they can see the sphincter muscle. The cut is usually left open to heal. In a closed sphincterotomy, your surgeon passes a blade under your skin to reach and cut the muscle.

When is surgery necessary for anal fissure?

Surgery. If you have a chronic anal fissure that is resistant to other treatments, or if your symptoms are severe, your doctor may recommend surgery.
